Classic Journeys
Rovos Rail has earned a reputation for classic journeys lasting 24 hours to a fortnight, linking some of Africa's greatest destinations - Cape Town and Dar-es-Salaam, game reserves and Victoria Falls, Namibia and the Karoo, the Garden Route and Swaziland.
Rovos Rail even has it’s own railway station, the rebuilt Capital Park Station and locomotive yard in Pretoria, which is the headquarters of this private railway company.
The Train
The trains - which may be hauled by steam, diesel or electric locomotives at various stages of the journey - carry a maximum of 72 passengers in 36 superbly appointed suites. The remodelled wood-panelled coaches have been refurbished to mint condition, allowing you to recapture the atmosphere of a bygone era. Enjoy fine cuisine and Cape wines in five-star luxury. Traditional furnishings and period décor ensure an atmosphere of elegance in the Dining, Lounge and Observation cars.
The Routes
The most popular route is the weekly 48-hour journey between Pretoria and Cape Town, or vice versa. This 1600-kilometre (994 mile) journey travels through the gold-rich Highveld, Kimberley, the Great Karoo desert and the spectacular mountain ranges of the Cape.
The Suites
The epitome of luxury, each spacious air-conditioned suite has a private bathroom, bar fridge, writing desk, personal safe and seating. Room service is available 24 hours a day.
The Royal Suites, each of which take up half a carriage, measure 16 sq metres in size (172 sq ft). Each has its own private lounge area and full bathroom with Victorian bath and separate shower.
The Deluxe suites (11 sq metres/118 sq feet) also accommodate two passengers in either twin or double beds and have a lounge area and en-suite bathroom with shower.
The new “Pullman” suites are 7 sq metres in size and while having an identical bathroom to that of the deluxe suites, the bedroom is smaller with a one up / one down bunk for twin requirements or a double bed for couples. During the day this is converted into a comfortable couch.
