Mont Rochelle Hotel, South Africa Experience food & drink ….

South Africa is a real treat for ‘foodies’ and (presumably) ‘drinkies’ ! The standards at restaurants are consistently high whether you are eating in the very best establishments or in an everyday eaterie. And of course South African wine has become firmly established on the international scene.

Use the Rossouw’s Restaurant guide published annually by Portfolio and available for £ 9.95 (incl. P&P). Over 400 restaurants and eateries have been anonymously reviewed by diners for food, wine list, service and ambience in Cape Town, the Winelands and a selection along the Garden Route.
Head for Hout Bay and Fisherman’s Wharf for some of the freshest seafood in the Cape Peninsula and watch the seals playing in the bay as you eat it.
The Cape Winelands are renowned as a gourmet area, often with historic or scenic locations and of course good wine lists.
And it’s certainly not all about Cape Town. Johannesburg has some of the finest restaurants in the country, Durban’s Indian cuisine is legendary and all of the major urban areas have something good to offer.
Visit one of the many food festivals. The Prickly Pear festival in the Eastern Cape (Feb); the Lambert’s Bay Kreeffees (Crayfish) in March; the Knysna Oyster Festival and the Calitzdorp Port Festival, both in July; Hantam Vleisfees (meat feast) in Calvinia (Aug); Cellar Rats Wines Festival in the Magaliesberg (Aug); Knsyna Gastronomica in September. This is not an exhaustive list – there are more !
The Cape winelands are home to a growing number of boutique olive oil-makers, whose product compares with the best oils that Spain, Italy and Greece can offer - and they have the awards to prove it.
