Here are a selection of personally recommended places to stay in Zambia. We have travelled to, and stayed in, every one.

The Falls Resort

Zambezi Sun – 212 rooms, Royal Livingstone Hotel – 173 rooms

The Falls Resort is situated in the 46-hectare Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Wildlife Park, which fringes the Zambezi River, and incorporates the 3-star Zambezi Sun and the 5-star Royal Livingstone Hotel. The Zambezi Sun is located on the edge of the Eastern Cataract of the Victoria Falls. For the traveller in search of luxury the Royal Livingstone Hotel is set in the lush riverine belt on the banks of the Zambezi River. Facilities at the resort include swimming pool, childrens club, beauty salon, and several dining options in each hotel and at the central Entertainment Centre.

Islands Of Siankaba

6 Tented Chalets; 1 Honeymoon Suite

Islands of Siankaba is a unique lodge on two untouched islands in the Zambezi River, upstream from the Victoria Falls. There is a wide range of activities available, including a visit to the falls, canoeing, nature trails, a sunset cruise and a visit to a local village and school. The seven secluded chalets, each with its unique and individually different view of the river, are linked by a foot bridge to the island where you will find the bar and restaurant. An overhead walkway in the tree canopy connects the elevated chalets. Additionally the Honeymoon Suite has a private dining area overlooking the Zambezi. Since the opening of the lodge only 5 employees have been hired from outside the area.

Kasaka River Lodge

10 Tents, 'Hippo Pod' Family Unit

This tented camp is set on the banks of the Zambezi River, directly across from the famed Mana Pools World Heritage Site in Zimbabwe. There are 10 tented rooms, one of which is a honeymoon suite and there is also a large family unit, all decorated with an African flair. This Lodge is only a few minutes by road from the Lower Zambezi National Park, so you can enjoy pristine game viewing in this region. Relax beside the pool within the indigenous garden and take in the ever changing views over the water.

Chongwe River House

Chongwe River House is a spectacular and unique private home. It offers sensational views of the dramatic mountainous escarpment of the Lower Zambezi National Park and the foreground, the magnetic river frontage. Sleeping eight guests in four individually decorated spacious en-suite bedrooms, Chongwe River House is the ideal safari base for a family or group of friends wanting a private safari, fully serviced by a team that includes a private guide and private vehicle.

Tsika House

3 Rooms

Set in the middle of the Zambezi River, Tsika Island Camp is 35km upstream from Chongwe and the prime aim of a stay at Tsika is canoe safaris along the Zambezi River, so a level of fitness is needed. Tsika Island is a community partnership project and combines the canoeing safari with an authentic cultural experience, offering visits to the Mugurumeno Basic School and the cultural village on the nearby mainland as activities. Accommodation is for six guests in three rustic thatched “bush rooms”. Walking is offered (there are no predators on the island) for close up encounters with game including elephant and buffalo, as well as excellent birding.

Chongwe River Camp

Lower Zambezi National Park

9 Tents & 2 Tented Suites

Located in Zambia’s Lower Zambezi Valley bordering the Lower Zambezi National Park is one of the most established Lower Zambezi camps, Chongwe River Camp, nestled along the river bank at the confluence of the Zambezi and Chongwe Rivers. Chongwe River Camp has nine classic tents under thatch and two private tented “suites” the Albida (two-bedroomed) and the Cassia (one bedroom honeymoon). Chongwe is relaxed and comfortable, with an open sandy campfire next to the river and a swimming pool. Activities include game viewing by vehicle in the Lower Zambezi National Park (a short drive from camp) game viewing by boat on the Zambezi, canoeing, walking, fishing and community visits (on request).

Kapani Lodge

Meaning the ‘place of Mopane trees’ Kapani is an exclusive lodge situated on the banks of one of the Luangwa River's many ox-bow lagoons. Accommodating just 18 guests it is an ideal place from which to start your Zambian safari experience, with year-round game drives and walks offering game viewing as good as you will find anywhere in Zambia. Each of the suites has its own lounge with bar fridge, with overhead fans inside the walk-in mosquito nets. Weather permitting, dining is al fresco with dinner taken on the terrace, the deck, or by the swimming pool.

Norman Carr Safari Bush Camps

Three seasonal bush Camps, each with 4 rooms, in prime locations in the heart of South Luangwa National Park. Luwi (pictured above) is a remote and rustic camp on the banks of a permanent lagoon - walking safaris are the thing here (not many roads!). Nsolo is situated on a bend in the Luwi River that runs through the park, a river system renowned for its lion population - this is big game viewing on foot and at its best. Safari activities from Kakuli will usually be a mixture of game drives and walking safaris - guests decide. These rustic bush camps offer guests a true traditional walking safari and African bush experience.

Mchenja Bush Camp

Mchenja is set beneath a magnificent grove of Ebony trees on the banks of the Luangwa river. The camp comprises four stylishly designed tents under thatched roofs, each with a deck in front overlooking the river and inside baths/outdoor showers. There is a small pool adjacent to the bar, within the thatched main lodge. Offering bush-style luxury, Mchenja is an ideal camp to complete a walking safari, or for those guests seeking a little more comfort. Excellent game viewing can be done on foot or from a vehicle, and night drives are usually very worthwhile.
