SELOUS GAME RESERVE

Selous Game Reserve

Covering 50,000 square kilometres, the Selous Game Reserve is one of the largest protected areas in Africa and as such it remains largely undisturbed by human impact. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to one of the most significant concentrations of important species including elephant, black rhinoceros, cheetah, giraffe, hippopotamus and crocodile.

The diversity in habitats makes the Selous Game Reserve a valuable arena for studying on-going ecological and biological processes. The variety in landscapes spans Miombo woodlands, open grasslands, riverine forests and swamps. Due to the sheer size of this reserve, there are limitless sites that will stay with you forever. Some highlights include the Rufiji River - the largest river in Tanzania, which flows through the reserve creating many different channels and lakes which form a central role throughout this amazing place.

Selous is almost twice the size of Belgium and four times larger than the famous Serengeti in the North, covering 5% of Tanzania’ s land area. The Selous’ ecosystem as a whole is made up of a few conservation areas, namely Mikumi in the North and the Kilombero game controlled area in the West, covering in total over 90,000 sq km of pristine wilderness devoid of human influence.

Siwandu

North Camp 6 Tents, South Camp 7 Tents

Siwandu (formerly Selous Safari Camp), situated on the shores of Lake Nzerakera, is in one of the most attractive areas of the huge Selous Game Reserve. All tents are widely spaced along the lake shore ensuring maximum privacy and wonderful views. The camp is comprised of two separate areas, used according to the number of guests in camp. Each section has its own swimming pool, bar and dining area and no movement between camps is required as each has its own host, game viewing vehicles, jetty for boat safaris and walking guides.

our opinion:

One of the first camps in The Selous & makes a great circuit with their other 2 properties in Ruaha NP & on the coast.

Selous Riverside Safari Camp

10 Tents

200 km South-West of Dar Es Salaam lies the mighty Selous Game Reserve, one of Africa’s least known yet wildest conservation areas, and at 55,000 sq km Selous is four times larger than the Serengeti. This reserve is home to over 1,000,000 large animals and is home to over half of Tanzania’s elephant population. The camp is about 6 km outside of the reserve, consisting of ten en-suite tents, equipped with comfortable beds, electricity and verandahs.

our opinion:

Outside of the actual reserve so you will see a little local life on the way, but a really good value for money option.
