Western Tanzania Safari

Western Tanzania offers something very different for the intrepid safari-goer. Katavi National Park in Tanzania is one of the undiscovered gems of the continent, a large and wild park, relatively undiscovered and a unique African Safari hideaway. Mahale Mountains National Park, bordering mystical Lake Tanganyika is quite simply stunning – and also the best place to see Chimpanzees in their natural habitat.

day 1

Katavi National Park

Depart Arusha airport this morning on a 3.5 hour flight to Western Tanzania – this includes pick-ups / drop-offs & a short fuel stop.

On arrival at Katavi National Park you'll be met by a guide who will drive you to Chada Katavi camp for your 4 night stay, with great game-viewing and a picnic lunch en route.

days 2-4

Explore Katavi

Drive out into wildest Katavi, potentially witnessing herds of buffalo, elephants, other plains game and big cats. Follow the river to see the podsof hippos who congregate in the pools and mudholes, plus plenty of crocodiles.

You will also get the opportunity for a walk, exploring the edge of the plains on foot. Also spend a night out fly-camping under the stars, drive from camp on an afternoon game drive, ending up at a fly-camping site for sundowners and a 3-course meal.

day 5

Greystoke Mahale Camp

Depart camp for a short (one hour) flight to Mahale. On landing, board the dhow which will take you down the lake - with lunch on the way - to Greystoke Mahale camp (approx. 1.5 hour boat ride).

On arrival at Greystoke the managers will orientate you around the camp, and explain about the chimpanzee trekking. The afternoon is at leisure to either go fishing, enjoy a short forest walk, or relax on the beach.

days 6-7

Chimpanzee Trekking

You'll have the chance to go trekking and looking for the chimps, with a morning departure from camp. Head up into the forest in search of man's closest relatives. Afternoons can be spent fishing, on dhow trips on the lake, or relaxing in camp.

day 8

To Arusha

Departure by dhow in time for your lunch-time flight back to Arusha, arriving late afternoon.

I cannot say enough good things about our experiences at Chada and Greystoke. The staff at both camps were amazing and our guides were some of the very best we have ever had in Africa. Many, many thanks to everyone for such an amazing experience
