TRAVEL ADVICE FOR HOLIDAYS TO MAURITIUS

Travel Advice, Information, and Tips for Mauritius has been compiled from multiple sources, however we are proud that the majority of the advice, tips, and information contained within was taken from the personal experiences from the entire Africa Collection team, that has been gathered over multiple trips to Mauritius.

PASSPORTS AND VISAS:

British passport holders do not require visas for Mauritius. If you have any other passport please contact the Mauritian High Commission, 32-33 Elvaston Place, London, SW7 5NW, telephone 020 7581 0294 or check the web site, www.maurinet.com. Your passport should be valid for the proposed duration of your stay. No additional period of validity beyond this is required. It should have at least one blank passport page.

HEALTH:

Vaccinations are not required for passengers travelling direct to Mauritius. However, prior to departure we do suggest that you check with your GP. Further health recommendations can also be found on the web site, www.maurinet.com. At certain times of the year there have been incidents of stonefish in shallow water and for this reason we recommend that you wear beach sandals for your protection in the water.

Please Note - All foreign nationals who have visited one or more of the six countries (Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Senegal and the Democratic Republic of Congo) affected by the Ebola Virus Disease during the preceding two months from their date of arrival in Mauritius will currently not be allowed entry to Mauritius.

TRAVELLING WITH MEDICATION:

If you are carrying personal prescription medication to Mauritius, you must carry a copy of your latest prescription and the drugs should be carried in their original containers bearing the name and address of the dispensing pharmacy. If you are in possession of tranquillisers and hypnotics such as Valium, Rohypnol, Lexomil or Ativan or dangerous drugs such as Co-Proxamol tablets without a covering prescription and/or medical certificate, this may result in a police enquiry.

INSURANCE:

Suitable Travel Insurance is essential and is not automatically included in your booking. Please ensure you understand the terms and conditions of your insurance, and take any relevant documentation with you.

CURRENCY:

The Mauritian Rupee is the currency unit, which is divided into 100 cents. All major currency notes may be exchanged at the banks or hotel cashiers. Traveller cheques are generally offered at a much better rate of exchange than notes, and you will get a better rate if you cash your cheques at a bank rather than the hotel cashiers. The Bureau de Change and banks at the airport are open for the arrival of most flights. All major credit cards are accepted in Mauritius, and there are a number of ATM facilities at the airport and in towns.

ELECTRICITY:

220 volts is used throughout the island and both three and two pin plug points are in every room. Adaptors are not required for visitors from the United Kingdom.

SPECIAL DIETS:

Special diets can easily be catered for. Dietary requests must be made to the airlines no less than 48 hours prior to departure. It is also worth mentioning any special requests on check in.

SECURITY:

Please ensure that your passport, air tickets and travellers cheques are safely stored in your room safe. Do not leave jewellery, mobile phones, cameras or any other valuables in your room or in public areas.

WEATHER:

Mauritius is an all year destination with a sub tropical climate. From November to April coastal temperatures reach 34c and from May to October the average temperature is 24c. Cyclones occur occasionally in Mauritius (usually in January and February), which may result in a couple of days heavy rain and winds, but, of course these cannot be predicted. However, at this time of year, the weather is generally still hot with prevalent sunshine. During the cooler months of May to September we recommend that you take a jumper or cardigan for the evenings.

TIPPING:

Tipping of hotel personnel is not mandatory, but a demonstration of your appreciation for good service. Personnel, who may be considered deserving of tips are porters, room cleaners and waiters in bars and restaurants. Tipping of transport is also appreciated and drivers of transfer vehicles, tour drivers and guides may be deserving of recognition. Tipping should be in local currency.

BUGS:

Mauritius is in the Tropics, and although not many, there are some bugs on the island. Mosquitoes are easily dealt with if you use mosquito replellent, which you will need to take with you. We recommend you put the air conditioning on in your room before you go for dinner to deter any other wildlife from entering your room.

MOBLILE PHONES:

If you are intending to use your phone in Mauritius please ensure you have international roaming installed. All GSM phones are compatible on the island, although there may be some areas with poor reception.
