Dive With Great White Sharks

South Africa has become the Mecca for diving with sharks, and cage diving with Great White Sharks is the adrenaline pinnacle for this activity. You really will get up close and personal with one of the most feared (and misunderstood) predators on the planet.

The Great Whites are found in so-called ‘Shark Alley’. Dyer Island is 5 miles offshore and nearby Geyser Rock supports a colony of about 40,000 Cape Fur Seals, one of the main reasons the Great White Sharks stay there. Shark Alley is the channel between these 2 islands. Viewing is possible year round but the best viewing months are from March to September. You will have the opportunity to photograph these awe-inspiring animals feeding at the surface, right alongside the boat, before you enter the cage!

And it's not all about the sharks. Cape Fur Seals, Jackass Penguins and a wide variety of sea birds are commonly seen. From July to November, Southern Right Whales are spotted almost every day, and Dolphins are occasionally seen too.

If coming from Cape Town (which is often the case) it is an early start to get to Kleinbaai (near Gansbaai) on the Cape South Coast, and exact times vary due to tides and sea conditions. You will normally head out at 09.00-10.00, returning mid-afternoon. We only use ethical operators, ideally smaller operations, very professional and safety conscious, and always departing from Kleinbaai to save you a lot of travelling time in the boat. Sharks are seen on a very high percentage of trips, but can't be guaranteed.

It is recommended that you book well in advance and allow a reserve day (if you are very keen!), in case of adverse weather conditions. You will be exposed to the open sea while travelling to and from the islands so if you are prone to seasickness we suggest you take precautions. No experience or scuba certification or equipment is required.

I'm not saying that everyone should swim with sharks, but sometimes you have to jump over your own shadow in order to learn something that you will never forget for the rest of your life. Then you know you can conquer your fears.
