Pongwe is a casual but refined beach lodge on the east coast of the island, set in pleasant grounds and bordering a lovely sandy beach and the Indian Ocean. The food is very good, serving a blend of seafood, local dishes and international fare. The infinity pool, with pleasant deck, is a great spot to enjoy a cool drink and enjoy the view. Pongwe Beach is lucky in the fact that the whole beach is protected by an offshore reef which keeps the inner waters calm and safe for all to swim in. Snorkelling and boat trips can also be arranged to the reef, kayaks & paddle board, and bicycles are available. As with many Zanzibar beaches the area is tidal.
The 20 rooms at Pongwe are all built in traditional Zanzibari style with a thatched roof (with the leaves sourced from their own beach), white-washed walls, walk-in shower and handcrafted local furniture. Each of the rooms has a private terrace. For the more practical the rooms all have; mosquito nets, eco-friendly ceiling fans, beach & bath towels. There are 3 room types which are spread across the property and which are suitable for different budgets, some of which can be used as family rooms. There are: 4 Seaview Suites, each with a plunge pool; 13 Beachfront Rooms, just a step away from the beach; and 3 Garden View Rooms, just 30 seconds walk to the beach.
Pongwe is an unpretentious, well run, good value for money and authentic African beach lodge, and one of our clients favourites on Zanzibar. Please note - The hotels water supply is from a well on site, and the water is slightly salty as the high tide mixes sea water with the well water.
