Sprawling across 1,500 square kilometres of open grassland in the southwest of Kenya, the Masai Mara is part of the same ecosystem as the Serengeti, which borders the reserve to the south. There is no fence between the two which allows for these two world renowned nature reserves to share in one of the most famous African wildlife sights - The Great Migration. Between July and August over a million wildebeest migrate through the Mara, causing a battle between predator and prey unrivalled in the world.
When visiting the Masai Mara you are immersed into one of the best places to experience the Big Five - Lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo. Lions are high in concentration and have grown used to humans, making them easier to spot. There is strict control over the vehicle numbers around animal sightings, giving a more authentic experience when out on a game drive. Outside of the Big Five the Masai Mara offers a chance to see large numbers of hippo, zebra and giraffe.
The Mara and Talek rivers are rife with Nile crocodiles - the tension of watching thousands of wildebeest crossing the crocodile infested waters is impossible to describe. There are also hundreds of species of birds, including over 50 birds of prey. The dry season, between July and October, provides the optimum time to experience the wildlife. The end of rainy season (throughout April and May) leaves the plant life lush and rich.
The abundant and diverse wildlife within the park is one of the most famous reasons to visit, but you will also leave with permanent memories of the beautifully varied landscapes and knowledge of the Maasai culture.
