Mahale Mountain National Park sits at the centre of the eastern shore of Tanganyika, and like its northerly neighbour is home to one of the last populations of wild chimpanzees in Africa. Similarly to Gombe, these chimps were habituated to visitors by a Japanese research project in the 1960s. The dry season provides the best time of year to witness the chimps in large groups, but the park is accessible all year round.
Towards the north of the lake, near the Kigoma, lies the smallest of Tanzania's National Parks, Gombe Stream. This 52 square kilometre park has become famous across the world due it's connection with Jane Goodall. It was in 1960 that Goodall first began studying chimpanzees and their social and family life. Today Gombe suffers from ever increasing human encroachment and the fragile eco-system is under severe threat.
With clear blue waters, mountain forests of green and sandy beaches, it is a striking place to visit. The Mahale Range of mountains provide an excellent vantage point to view across the water to the neighbouring country of DR Congo.
