There is much more to remarkable Réunion than simply the imagined beaches of an Indian Ocean Island. The mountains of the interior are of volcanic origin, up to 3 000 metres high, the three diverse Cirques (collapsed volcanoes) offer breathtaking scenery, and the active volcano of Piton-de-la-Fournaise is a ‘must see’. If you enjoy awesome nature, spectacular hiking and the great outdoors, the chances are that you'll enjoy a holiday to Réunion.
On arrival into Roland Garros Airport in Réunion collect your rental car and using the detailed directions provided take the short and scenic drive (approx. 1 hour) to charming Diana Dea Lodge for a 2-night stay. 9km from Sainte-Anne and set in a 350 acre estate, Diana Dea Lodge is ideally located to discover the east coast of Réunion and nearby Piton de la Fournaise.
The Piton de la Fournaise (‘peak of the furnace’) is one of the world's most active volcanoes, and one of the islands main attractions. You can reach the site in a normal rental car, or on foot, with well marked paths.
DIANA DEA LODGE

Saint-Pierre is a port town on the southwestern coast of Réunion Island. Lively cafes and restaurants line its waterfront. Reefs protect the town’s sandy beach. Notable landmarks include the 18th-century Town Hall, a former warehouse. The Saga du Rhum museum chronicles the history of rum production on the island. Terre Sainte, a fishing village, is southeast of town.
After Breakfast self-drive to Cilaos, via a mountain road with a reputed 400+ bends, taking you up to the high valley and the Cirque De Cilaos, and the heart of the Island. This charming and ssenic village is known for its thermal springs, the local cuisine and some fine scenery. Overnight stay at the Hotel Tsilaosa.
Cirque de Cilaos is the most populated of the three on the island (Cirque = Caldera = Collapsed Volcanic Crater), its rugged landscape worn down by erosion, and here more than anywhere else dominated by the massive Piton des Neiges, which rises to 3,071m in altitude. An integral part of the National Park, this Creole high mountain village is the gateway to nearly 80 km of trails which are scattered around the cirque, including hikes to the Piton des Neiges, the roof of the Indian Ocean. Cilaos is not just a mountain resort, it's also a spa town, with two natural mineral water springs.
The cosy hotel Tsilaosa is located in the heart of charming Cilaos, in the main street, at the foot of the Piton des Neiges.
After the activity and travelling of the previous few days you will now head to the west coast and Réunion's mini-Riviera! Saint-Leu is a small town and fishing port on the west coast of Réunion. The town’s beach is known as a surf and paragliding hub. Just off the coast, the Natural Marine Reserve of Réunion features a coral reef sheltering thousands of species, including turtles, starfish, crustaceans and tropical fish.

This is the classic self-drive itinerary for Réunion, using good standard hotels, and seeing the highlights of the island. We offer a full tailor-made service to reunion - maybe more mountains & less beach; specialist hiking itineraries; longer or shorter stays; cheaper hotels or guesthouses - all options are possible. Although the island is not large, driving can be a little slow due to the windy roads and traffic, but the scenery makes it all worthwhile.
There are plenty of great combination options in the region. There are direct flights from Réunion to Johannesburg, Nosy Be and Antananarivo in Madagascar, Mayotte (another unique Indian Ocean Island), Mauritius and the Seychelles - the combination options are myriads, Cape Town & South Africa and Mozambique, for something different. Or one of the great lakes in Africa. Or Rwanda for a Mountain Gorilla experience. There are plenty of options!
